In an imposing performance at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won by 50 runs against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Match 8 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. It was RCB’s first victory at Chepauk since 2008, which put an end to a 17-year wait at this ground.

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and decided to bowl first. RCB’s batting started with Phil Salt giving an explosive beginning, scoring 32 off 16 balls.

His attacking style left CSK bowlers on the back foot in the early stages of the game. But his stay was short-lived as Noor Ahmad displayed his bowling skills with a well-placed delivery, resulting in a quick stumping by MS Dhoni.

After Salt’s exit, Devdutt Padikkal came in and carried on the aggressive tempo. He went after Ravindra Jadeja, scoring 14 runs off an over. Padikkal’s 27 off 14 balls was cut short by Ravichandran Ashwin, who got a low catch at covers, taken by Gaikwad.

Captain Rajat Patidar anchored the innings afterwards, taking advantage of a couple of dropped catches by CSK fielders. Patidar’s patient 51 from 32 balls gave solidity in the middle overs.

In the meantime, Virat Kohli, who was slow to find his feet, tried to quicken the pace but got out for 31 to Noor Ahmad, who took his second wicket.

Liam Livingstone’s short stay was marked by his six-hitting off Noor Ahmad but then being bowled, awarding the left-arm spinner his third wicket. In spite of all these disappointments, RCB had a late push.

Matheesha Pathirana’s great penultimate over that gave just one run while picking two wickets, those of Patidar and Krunal Pandya, briefly stalled RCB’s flow. But Tim David’s fireworks in the last over, in which he blasted Sam Curran for three sixes, pushed RCB to a strong total of 196/7.

CSK’s pursuit started on uncertain terms. Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar spearheaded RCB’s bowling with accuracy.

Hazlewood’s second over was especially telling, getting rid of both Rahul Tripathi and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad with back-of-a-length balls. Bhuvneshwar then bowled Deepak Hooda, leaving CSK struggling at 30/3 in the powerplay.

Rachin Ravindra tried to stabilize the innings during the declining wickets. Sam Curran’s try at counter-attacking proved to be futile, as he holed out to Livingstone’s bowling.

CSK reached 65/4 at the halfway stage and required a large partnership to keep themselves in the game.

Just as Ravindra and Shivam Dube seemed to be rebuilding, Yash Dayal delivered a game-changing over, dismissing both set batsmen and effectively sealing the match in RCB’s favor.

Ashwin’s departure soon after to Livingstone further deepened CSK’s troubles.

In the midst of crumbling innings, MS Dhoni’s walk in at the crease provided a ray of hope and charged up the Chepauk crowd. Ravindra Jadeja even managed some belated hits, but he also fell prey to Hazlewood, who finished with fine figures of 3/21 from his four overs.

In spite of the impending doom, Dhoni gave a classic cameo, hitting two sixes and one four off Krunal Pandya in the last over to the home crowd’s delight. But all was for naught as CSK finished their innings at 146/8, losing by a 50-run margin—their biggest IPL loss at Chepauk to any team.

This win was especially noteworthy for RCB, ending a 17-year run of not winning against CSK at Chepauk. Their last and sole victory at this ground was in the first season of the IPL back in 2008.

The victory also saw RCB sit atop the IPL 2025 points table, having achieved back-to-back wins. CSK, meanwhile, will have to regroup and fix their issues as they gear up for the next matches.

RCB’s bowlers delivered a clinical performance to defend their total. Josh Hazlewood was particularly impressive, returning figures of 3 for 21.

Yash Dayal provided crucial breakthroughs, taking 2 wickets for 18 runs. Liam Livingstone also chipped in with 2 wickets, ensuring that CSK’s batsmen were under constant pressure throughout the innings.

CSK’s bowling unit had a tough time against RCB’s attacking batting unit. Noor Ahmad was the best bowler, taking 3 wickets for 36 runs.

Matheesha Pathirana also played his part, taking 2 wickets for 36 runs. The bowlers were unable to stop RCB’s run rate, particularly in the death overs.
